Sinéad O'Connor (1966-2023) was an Irish singer-songwriter and activist. Her music was informed by a childhood filled with abuse, primarily from her mother and from the staff of the Catholic Magdalene asylum she was placed in. Her first two albums, The Lion and the Cobra (1987) and I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990), were global successes, especially the second single off the latter, the Prince-written "Nothing Compares 2 U."

But her career trajectory turned in 1992, when during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II in protest of child abuse within the Catholic Church. She was ahead of her time — it would be another nine years before the Vatican acknowledged child sexual abuse by priests — but she received a career-stunting wave of blowback. She continued to speak out about the church, human rights, and other issues until her untimely death in 2023 at age 56.
